The DJing line-up remained unchanged from the previous year, however all sorts of changes were happening to other NMB nights!

DJs at Stardust: Rufus Brutus and Jim Maclaine

Indie gets heavy! Ballistic replaces Vaselene as the Thursday Indie/Rock night at the NMB and Hallam’s Goth night Epitaph becomes Dissolution as the music adds an industrial edge to the 80s/alternative mix.

Hallam Union also launches a 90s Revival night called Sheff 2 on a Tuesday (a cunning re-use of the name previously used in the late 80s & early 90s for the Thursday Indie/Live Night). The event is hosted in the re-badged Furnace and Cooler within the NMB.

Hallam Union shows all the England & Scotland games in the 1998 World Cup, with John Smiths, Double Vodkas and Hot Dogs (with onions!) all 98p each!

Past, present and future Stardust DJs were covering most of the student pop nights in Sheffield between them. Current Stardust DJs Jim MacLaine (Hallam University’s Forgers Bar at Collegiate on Thursdays and Sheffield Uni’s Post Grad night Cert PG) and Rufus Brutus (Fabulous and Pop Tarts at Sheffield University) were complemented elsewhere by French Ben (Top of Dee Pops at The Music Factory), Top Cat (Blunted at Unit) and The Dean of Disco (Hot Pants at the City Hall, Sheff 1 at the NMB and pretty much everything at The Leadmill!).

Robbie Williams headlines on his first tour at Sheffield University with tickets costing £11 and £10 will get you in to see The Foo Fighters in The Octagon.

Louise, now solo after leaving Eternal, brings her No Sweat tour to Sheffield City Hall.

Johnny Vegas has such a low turnout for his show at the City Hall’s Memorial Hall that he takes the entire crowd to the pub, buys a round of drinks and finishes his show there.

Shane Richie appears in musical Boogie Nights at The Lyceum.

Pubs in Sheffield City Centre doing well, but that are now long gone or have changed their name, included: The Hornblowe (demolished), Tin Pan Alley (demolished), The Ferret & Trouser Leg (The Church House), The Hallamshire Hotel (Bloo 88) and The Yorkshire Grey (demolished).

Biggest Selling UK Single of 1997: “Candle In The Wind 1997” – Elton John

In The News in 1997:There is a landslide General Election victory for the Labour Party under Tony Blair; Diana Princess of Wales dies in a car crash in Paris and Channel 5 is launched.
