The legendary Dean of Disco returned to Stardust following the departure of Top Cat (Simon) to pastures new. Stardust was regularly selling out each week, although there was an ill-fated attempt to organise a Stardust day-trip to Blackpool.

With the 2nd room now established, Stardust has the new tag-line: “ 4 Decades, 3 DJs, 2 Rooms, 1 Venue”.

To entice people to buy in advance, tickets for Stardust are now sold at different prices throughout the week. Monday – £1, Tuesday/Wednesday – £2 and Thursday/Friday – £3.

Freshers week guests at Hallam include nights by dance Super Clubs Godskitchin and Miss Moneypenney’s.

Monthly mid-week club nights at Hallam include alt-rock night Doghouse (replacing Ballistic), goth night Dissolution and R n B night Phenomena – which has Mis-Teeq guesting, featuring Alesha Dixon.

Comedy nights abound at The City Hall. Up-and-coming comedian Lee Mack is on the FHM sponsored New Comedians show at The Memorial Hall, Harry Hill plays the main hall with guest “Stouffer The Cat” and in a “Local Show, for Local People” the League of Gentlemen sell out multiple nights.

Roni Size brings his Reprazent collective to The Octagon.

With The Stone Roses now disbanded, Ian Brown headlines The Octagon, Reni brings his new band The Rub to town and Mani DJs with tribute act The Complete Stone Roses.

Nostalgia is in. As well as The Complete Stone Roses, Sheffield is awash with other tribute acts. Ga Ga (Queen), Teen Spirit (Nirvana), Bjorn Again (ABBA), La Doors and The Bootleg Beatles amongst many others all pull sizeable crowds.

The Millennium Galleries in Sheffield open.

The 2001 Census takes place and 390,000 people declare themselves as followers of the ‘Jedi’ faith following an early internet campaign.
